The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the agency to recall seven drugs because they contain chemicals that could harm the heart, brain and kidneys. The drugs — including Cipro and Ciprofloxacin — were found to be in the wrong hands and could have harmful effects on patients’ heart and blood flow.
The FDA is also recalling six other drugs, including a heart drug, a drug used to treat high blood pressure and an antibiotic,, to warn potential side effects, including an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The FDA said it plans to issue a warning label on the recalled drugs based on information provided by patients and the FDA, and the FDA and the company will discuss this on the FDA's website.
The company said it has received a number of letters from patients and health care professionals, including the FDA and the agency, which also said they are reviewing the recall.
The drugs will be sold under the following names: Ciprofloxacin, Cipro-fluorometasone, Cipro-hydroxychloroquine, Ciprofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin-methotrexate, Ciprofloxacin-rifampicin and Ciprofloxacin-nafcillin.
Cipro, Ciprofloxacin, Cipro-methotrexate and Ciprofloxacin-nafcillin are used to treat a range of infections caused by bacteria and certain viruses.
In a letter to the FDA and company, Dr. Aaron Merkley, a professor of pharmacy and medical affairs at Tufts University, said: "I have heard from patients and health care professionals that these products may be dangerous. We are in discussions with our regulatory agency to determine if these products are safe."
The FDA is also warning that the drugs may cause or worsen heart problems. The FDA is also advising patients to report any unexplained symptoms to a doctor, and to seek medical attention immediately, as these could be signs of a potentially serious condition.
Cipro and Ciprofloxacin are the brand names of the antibiotic fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and both are used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including acne, pneumonia and certain sexually transmitted diseases.
The FDA has also issued warnings about the risk of heart attacks and stroke among the drugs.
“This is a very serious issue for patients and health care providers, and I would urge everyone to report any known or suspected health risks to the FDA,” said Dr. Aaron Merkley, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The FDA is also requiring drug manufacturers to update their drug labels, which include the risk of heart and blood vessel problems, to reflect the latest information.
The FDA said it is reviewing the recall and is working with FDA, health care providers and other stakeholders to address the concerns.

The FDA also said the agency has determined that the drug products are safe and effective, and that patients who are prescribed the drugs should be monitored and warned.
The FDA is also requiring drug manufacturers to update their drug labels.
In October, the FDA ordered manufacturers to warn consumers that the products contain chemicals that could increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, including those that are similar to Cipro.
The FDA said the drugs were recalled after it found the following chemicals in the product labels:
The FDA added that the products are not FDA-approved, but the agency is reviewing the recall.
A company spokesperson told the AP: "We are taking these concerns seriously, and we will work with our regulatory agency, health care providers and other stakeholders to address these concerns, ensuring safety and efficacy of these drugs."
The FDA is not disclosing the results of the affected drugs.
